[post_content] => TIRANA, Sept 28 - Albania will hold this Saturday for the third year the 2006 Miss Globe International beauty contest, this time in the ancient town of Butrinti in southernmost Albanian district of Saranda. Some 40 girls from across the world will contest for the title. Miss Globe International, also known as Miss Globe, is a beauty pageant which is annually held in eastern Mediterranean region. This is the third time that Albania is hosting the event on its soil.
Tanzania's Miss Jamila Munisi banks on Tanzanians' support for the contest. She has asked Tanzanians to pray for her so that she wins in her contest. Jamila said that the change of climate has not affected her in any way. According to Jamila, the event organizers are very cooperative and that favourism has no place there. ''The situation has encouraged me to win the title, I have all the criteria and qualifications. No one can stop me,'' said Jamila. ''What I need from my fellow Tanzanians is to give me their support and pray for me. I am sure God would consider your prayers and enable me clinch the title,'' she concluded.

[post_content] => DURRES, Sept. 27 - The Italian-Albanian expedition in the ancient amphitheater of Durres discovered also an ancient ceramic bottle with some 546 coins, according to Italian prof. Sara Santoro of the Parma University. The bottle and the coins were found at an important Middle-aged wall among Roman structures of the ancient theater. Albanian prof. Frederik Stamati is repairing the coins at the laboratory.Santoro said that it is believed that the coins should belong to the 15th-16th century and cut in Raguza, or Dubrovnik, Croatia. All coins have on one side the Christ face and that of Saint Blaz on the other. Experts believe that the bottle and the coins should have been part of the things that a girl has taken with her when she was married. The coins will be kept at the Durres museum. The Italian-Albanian expedition has started to work since 2004. (Tirana Times Staff)

[post_content] => GJIROKASTRA, Sept. 27 - The lack of qualified experts is a great obstacle for the protection of the cultural monuments in the southern town of Gjirokastra. The local department of cultural monuments has only 10 experts who are so overcome by the work. They should take care of at least seven objects that should be repaired like the house of Sk쯤ulat췥, ȡbej, Babameto, Babaramo, the castle and the bazaar turn. The government has allocated 17.5 million leks to repair them but they have practically no possibility to rush to each of them.
Meanwhile a well-known natural monument in Picar village in Gjirokastra, known as "Gurra e Picarit" is threatened that may be lost after there has been noted a crack in all the trees in the area. Head of the commune Shk쭱im Gu襠said that some 80 trees were suffering from a crack since some months. They asked for the presence of experts. They have made some partial cuts to save them but they are afraid to continue further. The "Gurra e Picarit" has a group of some 180 trees, most of whom are more than 100 years old.

[post_content] => TIRANA, Sept. 20 - Only 5-6 kilometers from the Ballshi town, on the right side above some hills one may see the Hekali place where the ancient ruins of the Bylis town are found. It is believed that it was created since the ancient times and continued to exist during the Middle Age as well. Bylis has started to exist since the 4th century B.C. and populated by the people from a nearby town known with the name of Nikoja. Bylis surrounding walls were some 2,200-2,300 meters long and having more space than Nikoja it soon turned into an important center for the Bylyni big family. They produced their coins during the years 220-260. then during the second century it seemed it lost its importance and turned into a small town or a village because of the wars between the Illyrians and the Romans. During the 6th century its area was reduced to one third of the previous one.
The first archaeological excavations at the area started in 1976. there were found five paleochristian basilicas, five mosaics belonging to the 5-6 century, other ancient monuments, surrounding walls, a ruined theatre, three walking areas and other objects. The town has Greek and roman architecture which mix with the Illyrian one of the time. Bylis is a good tourist place to be visited.

[post_content] => GJIROKASTRA, Sept. 17 - Dr. Alexandra Cleworth, member of the American Archaeological Institute, said during a visit to the southern town of Gjirokastra that it needed better management in order to preserve its ancient values. A group of the institute had gone to the town to consider further cooperation. Gjirokastra has been included in the sites protected from UNESCO as of international values. Cleworth said the town has some very original values for which local residents could help with investment. That would also pay back bringing tourists to visit the town. She said that the lack of management has reduced the number of tourists visiting the town.
