TIRANA, Nov. 12 – Tirana’s municipal council has approved fees for parking in downtown public spaces which will be collected by a newly established municipal agency, a service which up to now has been offered free of charge.

The decision which was boycotted by the opposition Democratic Party councilors has divided Tirana into three areas with fees ranging from 20 lek to 100 lek (€0.14 to 0.7) per hour. Residents in the new parking lots will be excluded from the fees.

Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj said the decision will discipline the transport system, reduce traffic and increase the municipality’s income. According to him, the new parking lot behind the Mother Teresa square is generating Euro 1,000 in daily income.

The new parking lots will be managed by the municipal Tirana Parking agency.

Opposition Democratic Party councilors described the new tariffs as too costly for the average income of Albanians.

The municipality of Tirana led by former mayor Lulzim Basha proposed a costly parking concession ahead of the June 2015 local elections but withdrew because of the high costs for drivers.
