Israeli private investigator detained

TIRANA, March 28 – An Israeli private investigator hired by a member of Albania’s parliament has been detained and not allowed to leave the country after airport security found an electronic device the PI says is used to hunt for electronic bugs.

The 51-year-old man identified as Yoram Frig was detained Friday at Rinas Airport as he was leaving Tirana. His passport was confiscated and he is unable to leave Albania.

Prosecutors have filed proceedings against Frig over “illegal surveillance of computer data” and are now seeking a court order to keep the passport of the suspect who holds shares in the Cyprus-based company Faturenet Holding Corp, related to the Panama Papers, a massive leak of millions of documents that exposed corruption and crime on a global scale.

The Israeli citizen told local agencies that he was contracted by MP Tom Doshi and that the device is not used for surveillance but to detect electronic bugs.

“I informed the customs in the airport and they informed the police. I explained them about the device and told them that I travel with it around the world,” he said.

The electronic device was checked by experts to see if it has been used for wiretapping or other illegal actions. This was the suspect’s fourth visit to Albania.
