drogeTIRANA, April 3 – Greek police said Monday it has broken a criminal network that supplied large quantities of marijuana from Albania to Greece. The gang imported drugs originating from Albania to several other EU countries.

Police swooped on the gang during the weekend, seizing 210 kilograms of marijuana and arresting three suspects including an Albanian citizen.

One of the alleged members of the gang is a 40-year-old Albanian suspected of organizing the export of drugs from Albania. Authorities said that two Greek citizens were assigned the task of storage and distribution of the drugs in Greek territory while another citizen arranged the transport of drugs via small commercial trucks to EU countries.

On Monday, Greece police also found 270 kilograms of marijuana inside a truck in an area close to Athens. The vehicle was stolen and was being used to store the narcotics originating from Albania.

Italy and Greece are two of the largest destinations of Albanian grown marijuana. Authorities suspect that extraordinary amounts of drugs cultivated in Albania are transported to the border by small level couriers linked to criminal networks who deal with the transportation of drugs inside Greece.

In February, Greek police seized about two tons of marijuana originating from Albania.
