Police seize 1.87 tons of cannabis

policTIRANA, April 5 – Authorities in Albania seized Tuesday 1.8 metric tons of dried cannabis hidden in bushes about 100 meters from the coast of Karaburun Pennisula in the southwestern district of Vlora.

A police statement, said that the drugs were packed in 104 plastic bags and hidden in the uninhabited area of Karaburun.

The police operation was conducted in collaboration with the Italian law enforcement agency Guardia di Finanza.

Earlier this year, police in the district of Vlora found 1.38 tons of dried cannabis hidden in the underground tunnels of a house. Authorities said that the drugs were bound for neighboring Italy.

Last year, authorities claim to have destroyed about 2.5 million marijuana plants, four times the amount destroyed in 2015.

In addition, authorities also confiscated several metric tons of cannabis ready to be shipped to neighboring Italy and Greece.
