45 political parties registered for the June polls
TIRANA, April 12 – Albania’s Central Election Commission (CEC) approved Wednesday the registration of 13 other small parties that will participate in the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 18.
Members of the electoral body said that the total number of political parties registered as electoral entities for the upcoming elections has reached to 45.
“There have been no other request for registration. The deadline has passed, therefore the total number of parties registered for the elections is 45,” the CEC chairman Denar Biba said.
Earlier in March, opposition parties decided not to register for the June polls, threatening to boycott parliamentary election unless a caretaker government is formed to protect the elections from “drug money.”
“We have decided not to file a request to register with the CEC as electoral entities, and in consequence as an opposition coalition until a political agreement is reached to guarantee free and fair elections in Albania,” the opposition parties said in a statement.
The opposition parties have also refused to register at the CEC for the by-elections in Kavaja.
