Young opposition supporters continue protests against MoI Xhafaj

TIRANA, June 6 - Young supporters of the country’s opposition Democratic Party continued protesting in front of the interior ministry this week, calling for the resignation of Minister of Interior Fatmir Xhafaj and the entire governing coalition.

According to them, the country’s current governing Socialist Party is to blame that a big number of Albanians is choosing to leave the country.

“Let’s take Rama, Xhafaj, Tahiri and the entire socialist bunch in migration, so that two million Albanians can stay in their country,” Democratic Party Youth Forum representatives told local media during the protest.

They referred to the latest record high numbers of Albanians chasing the American Dream in late 2017 through the US diversity visa lottery - a peak that had not been registered since the green card lottery was instituted in 1995.

“One million Albanians have filled out the American lottery form over the past three years. 110 thousand young people have officially requested asylum in EU countries. 290 thousand citizens are unable to ensure sufficient nutrients. Ten percent of children are only fed once a day. Fifty thousand children are exploited for heavy work. Twelve heads of families have committed suicide because they couldn’t pay their electricity bills,” protesters stated.

In this context, DPYF members called on all citizens to participate in the protest which, according to them, should be nationwide.

“If we don’t react today, the narco-Prime Minister will not just deny our right to speak tomorrow, but will also threaten our lives,” the protesters’ declaration for the media concluded.
