TIRANA, Oct. 24 –  During a meeting on Tuesday between Albanian Minister of Defense Olta Xhacka and her Italian counterpart Elisabetta Trenta, Xhacka underlined again Italy is one of Albania’s close partners and historic allies and said Albania will lead several regional initiatives in the near future.

Xhacka confirmed to Trenta Albania’s full will to keep up the same rhythm in representing the country in operations, missions and NATO initiatives.

“We have always responded to the Alliance needs, but also to our strategic allies, and this year alone, as you are informed, we doubled our military troops participating in the Afghanistan Resolute Support Mission. Our military ships work daily and hard to save the lives of innocent immigrants in the Aegean Sea, while our Demining Contingent within the NATO Advanced Force continues to receive the best evaluations for their contribution in securing the territory and allied citizens of Latvia,” Xhacka said during her speech.

The regional initiatives mentioned by Xhacka refer to the US initiative Adriatic Charter (A-5) and the South-Eastern Europe Defense Ministerial, which she said will offer a great opportunity to maximize regional cooperation and productivity.

Moreover, Xhacka expressed gratitude the ministry of defense’s personnel is now part of the Southern “Regional Hub” for Naples’ Allied Joint Force Command and Albania is part of the NATO Excellence Centre – the first time Albania participated as a sponsor country.

Meanwhile, Trenta reconfirmed Italy’s unwavering support of Albania in its European aspirations and further on.

“We have dealt with a number of issues in our common interest with my colleague Xhacka: from the strengthening of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of education, training, military medicine, to the participation in important international military missions, especially in Afghanistan and within the framework of the “Resolute Support Mission,” for the political- military situation in the regional framework of Balkan countries, as well as Albania’s important role in relation to this,” Trenta said.

A workshop to briefly review the possibilities to cooperate in the defense industry field among a number of private enterprises specializing in the sector followed the joint press conference, in the conclusion of which Trenta underlined she will transmit everything that was discussed in Albania to official Rome and the Italian head of the Council of Ministers.
