TIRANA, April 22 – Almost two weeks after the robbery at the national “Mother Teresa” Airport, where Admir Murataj was killed and almost 10 million euros were robbed from an Austrian Airlines plane, police announced it has arrested four suspects on Monday.

The names of the first two are Renaldo Sula and Saimir Cela, from Elbasan, who are alleged to have played a supporting role to the robbery.

It was in Elbasan where police discovered a car repair shop believes was used to make the modification of the vehicle they used for the robbery as a tax inspection car. The repairs shop was rented last September by Eldi Çala, brother of Klement Çala, also being wanted by the police and suspected to have been Admir Murataj’s right arm.

Both Murataj and Çala are the ‘masterminds’ behind previous robberies both in Greece and Albania, according to the police.

The other two detainees are Alkond Bengasi, from Elbasan but residing in Tirana and Olsian Veseli from Fushë-Kruja. They are also suspected of having played a supporting role in the robbery by assisting in its various stages.

At least one of them was thought to have been the driver of the second van with which the robbers, after exchanging fire with the police, managed to escape into.

The robbery at Albania’s only international airport took place on the afternoon of April 9th. The robbers managed to enter one of the outside entrance gates, removing the concrete barriers and breaking the lock chains to arrive near the Austrian Airlines plane, where 5.7 million euros from three different banks were being transported on board and were to be transferred abroad.

Speeding up, the vehicle used another point to leave the airport, no more than five minutes from the moment of entry.

Not much later, the robbers faced a patrol of the Fast Intervention Force, with which it engaged in a shootout that resulted in Murataj’s death.

The robbery raised major security concerns over Albania’s sole international airport, especially since this is the third robbery taking place there or in its proximity.
