TIRANA, June 4 – The government has decided to open the way to demolish the National Theater and build a new theater building and high-rise complexes surrounding it, as envisaged by the “special law” for the theater.

On June 3, it was published in the Official Decision Journal of the Council of Ministers authorizing the establishment of the commission for negotiating the contract with the private company.

Local media reported this decision was adopted on April 4, 2019 in the Council of Ministers, but was not published on the Prime Minister’s official website, as was done with other decisions taken on that day.

The Alliance for the Protection of the Theater, which together with citizens and artists has protested against the theater demolition project for the last 18 months, today stated that “it will end up protecting the theater, both psychologically and physically.”

In a statement to the media, the Alliance writes that with this decision, Prime Minister Rama and Mayor Veliaj “have declared war on not only the National Theater and the public interest, but the Constitution and the rule of law in Albania.”

“The Theater event today is a decisive moment in the history of Albania, between those who wanted to rob this country and those who defended it.”
