Albania Steps Up Its NATO Role
TIRANA, April 29 - Albania will step up its role in NATO, increasing troops and aid to the alliance’s efforts in Afghanistan.

The news came during a visit by NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in Tirana on Thursday to meet with the top Albanian officials in his first visit to the country. Albania has been a NATO member for more than a year.

Albania has planned to send 85 more troops to Afghanistan who will train Afghan army and police. Tirana is also funding building eight new schools in Afghanistan and has offered scholarship for 100 Afghan students. It has now some 260 troops there.

This is a response from Tirana to the NATO request for an increase of troops in Afghanistan. Rasmussen also told journalists he would not comment on security and intelligence issues, when asked about the alliance’s stance on Albania’s controversial draft law on the intelligence service.

The local media had reported earlier this year that Rasmussen had directly called Prime Minister Sali Berisha to stop the parliament from passing the new draft law.

Rasmussen, being as diplomatic as possible, said he would rather stay out of domestic politics, but all parties should take an active and positive role in political life, which includes the opposition fully joining parliamentary life.
