New Privatization Wave Aims To Offset Deficit
TIRANA, June 17 – Albania will start a new wave of privatizations that will help to offset the budget deficit, Economy Minister Dritan Prifti said this week.

Prifti said the sale of insurer INSIG and the remaining state-owned shares of Albtelecom and OSSH would allow the government to collect between 100 and 150 million euros. “The next two years, 2010 and 2011, will be years of the major privatizations,” Prifti said. “We have chosen privatization as a reform strategy to diminish public property, especially when it is not efficient.”

Other public assets to be privatized include large enterprises like Albpetrol and a lot of real estate currently managed by the several government bodies, including the Defense Ministry.

Speaking in a lengthy television interview on the private News24 channel, Prifti also gave details on the impact of political crisis in Albania’s economy and other pressing issues for business, such as VAT refunds.

Tit-for-tat politics
TIRANA, June 14 – Albanians learn that Europe has set a mid-week time limit to the two political groupings to resolve their political conflict. That means that the governing Democratic party of Prime Minister Sali Berisha and main opposition Socialist party of Tirana Mayor Edi Rama should sit down, talk, quarrel, call names, physically attack, or love each other, do whatever they want, but give an end to the political deadlock or crisis (whatever is liked by each of them).

A glass half full
I have recently returned from an intense trip to Sarajevo, where a meeting organised by the Spanish presidency of the European Union took place between EU and Balkan foreign ministers. For those who see the glass half full, the past six months have been the best the region has seen in the past 20 years. Although the doors of Europe have not opened completely, the lifting of visa restrictions on Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, which will soon apply to Bosnia, Albania and eventually Kosovo, have opened the windows to Europe and let in a breath of fresh air.

EU Candidate Status - In November
TIRANA, June 16 – European Union Enlargement Commi-ssioner Stefan Fuele said this week that Albania, together with Montenegro would very likely have their response to the questionnaire and request for the candidate status by November. That is really good news to this country, but politics are likely to intervene. Normally the Democratic Party government of Prime Minister Sali Berisha will hail themselves for the achievement, while the opposition Socialist Party of Tirana Mayor Edi Rama will try to find how the corruption of the government is making
