Albania Gets OK For Visa-Free Benchmarks

TIRANA, july 15 - The European Commission reported Thrusday their services, with the participation of independent experts from the EU Member States, had completed a technical mission in Albania in the context of the visa liberalisation dialogue.

The mission verified on the spot progress against the outstanding requirements identified in the Commission proposal on lifting the short-stay visa obligation for Albanian citizens, as adopted on 27 May 2010.

On the basis of the experts’ reports, the Commission services will prepare their assessment on the fulfilment of the outstanding requirements. This assessment will be presented in September to the European Parliament and the Council, which will then decide about the lifting of the visa obligation for citizens of Albania.

Further on the EC office statement continues to makes some clarification on what the new visa-free regime will mean to Albanians.

Democrats, Socialists resume dialogue
TIRANA, July 13 - Albania’s two main parties said this week they would resume dialogue on solving the country's long-standing political crisis. The center-right Democratic Party and the leftist opposition Socialist Party said they will sit down in a roundtable to talk on ways to give an end to the political stalemate they started since last year's parliamentary elections. Berisha rejects any land-swap deal in Kosovo
TIRANA, July 12 - Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha said last week he rejected recent speculations about a possible land-swap between Kosovo and Serbia, arguing that border changes in the Balkans are against Albanians' interests and could destabilize the region. “I want to say out loud that protecting the current borders in the Balkans is in Albanians' interests, although I am the prime minister of Albania, a nation that lives in three other countries,” said Berisha during a speech at a summit in Dubrovnik

Eurobond issue officially abandoned for 2010
TIRANA, July 12 - Albania has scrapped plans to issue a Eurobond in 2010, and will also not turn to the IMF at present even though it seeks more euro investment, Prime Minister Berisha told Reuters last weekend. “In this such terrible situation as it is, we withdrew from the eurobonds," said Berisha. “All countries which were (seeking) eurobonds withdrew because Fitch or Standard & Poor's put Greece debt into junk status."

IMF’s Bell warns external risks remain high
TIRANA, July 14 - IMF representative Gerwin Bell has hailed government initiative to review the budget but warned not to underestimate external risks which continue remaining high. Speaking in a joint press conference with central bank governor Ardian Fullani, and Finance Minister Ridvan Bode, the International Monetary Fund’s official said the budget cut was a necessary step to lower the high deficit and public debt rates.
