TIRANA, Sept. 26 – Three people died in a car accident, which also injured 12 others. The accident occurred in southern Albania not far from the Gjirokastra city.
Three other people were shot dead in northern Lezha. There have been many alternatives but all refer to a small incident which later turned into a death case for three of them, all of the same family.
Another murder was committed in southwestern Albania, while all TV stations reported at length how a husband beat his wife, in front of the little daughter and at the Tirana court, where they had gone to divorce. Following that the violent man also hit a cameraman doing his job at the court.
These were some of the main news covering the local newspapers and TV news editions this week.
The accident near Gjirokastra on Sunday followed the clash of three cars in the Gjirokastra-Kakavie national road.
There are almost daily cases with accidents all over the country. That follows poor signaling, bad driving as the main causes.
But what really attracted the attention of the people was the death shooting in the north. After a small friction with the 24-year old son of a family, the alleged killer turned to the Kalashnikov he used to shoot against the main and also his parents, leaving them dead on the spot. The murderer has left the area and hidden somewhere. Police have set a reward of one million leks for any data on him but he is still at large.
The case is a typical one that has immediately turned into a blood feud one. The remaining son of the family lives in Italy. The family of the killer has left the house. They were close neighbors. Revenge is the main idea of the moment.
What are authorities doing about that?
Police say they are on the run after the alleged killer. But what about the fear of vigilante, revenge for the crazy killing act committed? Can the government or the local authorities do anything?
Sure, they can. Like, say, collect weapons possessed by the people. Where did the killer find the Kalashnikov? After the crazy year of 1997 all the army depots were stolen, looted and the weapons fell in the hands of the people. Following many efforts and money spent from the authorities and the international community it was believed that only a small amount of weapons had remained uncollected. But we are listening crimes everyday committed with weapons. Hard to believe that Kalashnikovs have been brought from abroad and sold here. That may be the case with small pistols but not the big rifles.
It is time again for the government to reconsider another effort to collect weapons from the people. There are different forms and methods which may be easily assisted by the international community.
