TIRANA, April 24 – Guenther Ofner of the Austrian EVN company specialized in the electrical sphere, visited Albania this week to meet with top officials and offer its services in upgrading the country’s power network. Ofner also met with Prime Minister Sali Berisha presenting a study on the exploitation of the waters in Devoll, offering the construction of three hydropower stations producing 340 mWs. That project would cost 700 million Euro. The project planned the construction of three tunnels 50 kilometers long which also helped the economic development of the area. It planned the move of only 200 hundreds persons in the area.
Albania has been under continuous power crisis during the post-communist period since 1990 due to the lack of rain, payment from consumers and outdated technology. It is also based on 99 percent of the electricity production on the hydropower stations, many of which have consumed a lot of investment to get rehabilitated.
