TIRANA, May. 22 – The problematic waste facility of Sharra will soon have a landfill that will address some of the most pressing problems of the area. Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Sokol Olldashi, and Augusto Nidoli, a representative from the Italian firm “Gesteco”, signed an agreement for the start of work to build the Sharra land fill. This project of the Italian company is financed by the Italian government at a cost of 6 million euro and the funds are being administered by the Italian Cooperation structures.
The work is expected to be complete within 2 years and the loan has been separated into three catgories: building expenses 3.781.919 Euros, machinery 1.818.081 Euros and technical assistance 400.000 Euros.
The project includes multiple measures to address, first, the polluted water by building sewage canals of 7 km length and a 10.000 m3 volume reservoir complete with pumps, the construction of inner roads in order to facilitate transportation to and from the facility as well as inner operations (a total of 4.2 km), the construction of gas wells in order to burn poisonous gases (the average depth of wells is expected to be 8m).
The project includes new offices for the administering company, (around 5.000 m2), fences around the facility and monitoring services before and after the completion of the project. The steps undertaken to maintain the feasibility of this project were done in collaboration with the Municipality of Tirana and the Ministry of Public Works.
