TIRANA, May 11 – Three of the four submarines will be sold for scrap and one kept as a museum, the local media quoted Defense Ministry sources Tuesday.
Shqip newspaper reported that the ministry officials had decided to hold at the end of May an international tender with an initial price of about $340,000 for three submarines that are useless at one of its bases in southwestern Albania. That was based on a government decision made earlier this year, it wrote, adding that all the procedure should be completed in six months.
Following that the three submarines, named Tufani, Vetetima and Rrufeja or Stuhia, should be moved from the Pashaliman base.
Their body is made of steel and copper weights some 2,000 tons.
They may also be used for any other purpose, like a bar or a restaurant but that would ask for more investment.
Authorities are finding it hard to spend more money to maintain them.
The fourth, likely the one also mentioned for the conflict with Russia in 1961, will be turned into a museum by the authorities.
