Blood feuds still affect a number of Albanian families

TIRANA, June 12 - Currently, Albania has 704 families affected by blood feuds, of which 591 live in Albania and 113 have left the country.

The study, assisted by police records, focused on six districts affected by this phenomenon: Shkodra, Kukesi, Lezha, Tirana and Durres.

Shkodra is the most affected from the Northern regions, with 156 families in blood freuds. Out of those 17 families are locked inside, 47 families have left abroad, while dozen of children dropped out of school and are in need of psychological help.

The second most affected district is the Lezha district, with 102 families in blood feuds, six of which are locked and 33 have left Albania.

Durres and Tirana are the least affected, with 86 and 68 families in blood feuds respectively, but both cities have turned into hosting places for families coming from other districts.

In the capital, blood feuds have arrived due to the population’s demographic movement, from north and north-eastern areas.

Most of the families affected by blood feuds live in poverty and misery. The economic burden comes from isolation and lack of good conditions, especially for the sick, who can not even receive proper medical care.
