EU pledges 50 million € to Albania in the fight against COVID-19

TIRANA, March 24 - The European Union has pledged 50 million euros to help Albania fight the coronavirus outbreak and recover its economy. The announcement was made by EU Ambassador to Albania via Twitter on Tuesday, who expressed the EU's commitment to stand with Albania during these hard times.

The fund consists in 4 million euros for immediate equipment and health support, 11 million euros for social protection and up to 35 million euros for economic recovery.

The President of Albania, Ilir Meta took to Twitter to refer to the EU's aid as a "valuable help in the main battle to protect the health of our citizens", while DP leader, Lulzim Basha expressed "gratitude towards the European Union for this valuable assistance to Albanians and Albania in this difficult day."

Ealier on Monday, Albania and North Macedonia were given the green light for the opening of accession talks by the General Affairs Council of the EU. The decision was welcomed by officials of both countries, marking a great step for the Western Balkans towards EU integration.
