TIRANA, April 13 – Following a recent report from a United Nations organization on weapons export to Libya, Albania said it has breached no international arms embargo on Libya. The reaction comes after opposition Socialist Party lawmakers demanded that parliament investigate such an issue and take the accountable officials to the court.
Last week, Secretary General of the Defence Ministry Edvin Kulluri denied claims by opposition lawmakers about an alleged violation of the arms embargo.
“The contract for ammunition export has been reached with a friendly country and its armed forces, which, according to the UN Security Council expert panel, are end-users,” Kulluri said. “The UN has started an investigation into an amount of 800,000 12.7 mm rounds of ammunition, which have been found in other destinations. According to the panel’s report, this amount of ammunition has been delivered to support the anti-Gaddafi rebel forces,” Kulluri said.
Albanian authorities said their contract was with a different Arab country and they were not aware of any change of destination following the ammunition’s departure from Albania.
