TIRANA, Jan. 7 – Police have arrested three people in relation to an incident related to an online video where young men are seen sexually abusing a teenage girl who had passed out from alcohol abuse and was being treated at the emergency room of Tirana’s main hospital.
Police said they had arrested a funeral worker and two friends of the 17-year-old girl who was shown being fondled and video as she laid unconscious in a hospital bed.
Evarist Pasha, 25, who appears in the video, had apparently approached the two male teenagers to see if he could provide funeral services thinking the girl had died. The two male friends, both 18, were charged with failure to report a crime.
The event, which happened many months ago, became known only after the video recorded by the young people involved started to circulate on social networks.
It caused a lot of anger among Albanians and raised numerous questions about the malfunctioning of a series of hospital service chains and the health system itself. Health authorities immediately said they would investigate and set measures so such things would not be repeated.
The teenage girl reported to police what she remembered from the event. She was accompanied by two young men to the hospital’s emergency department after consuming too much alcohol last year.
Health authorities said that was a unique case and doctors and nurses could not have prevented this particular case, but there was anger of the security personnel at the hospital, which is provided by a private company.
They said the teenage girl was medicated and she was able to recover within a few hours and was able to leave hospital on her own.
