TIRANA, Jan. 26 – Prime Minister Sali Berisha said that it was corruption among police officials which sent to death four special policemen last year.
Berisha was taking part at an annual evaluation meeting police hold every year.
Police said there were fewer deaths last year and also made a parade of the successes in the fight against organized crime and discovering of suspects.
But the premier reminded them that it was leaked information from a police official which had helped a suspect, considered as one of the most wanted, to avoid its capture from the police.
Last August four special force policemen were killed while trying to arrest Dritan Dajti in western Durres city.
Berisha said that it was a police inspector who had covered “terrorist Dritan Dajti becoming a co-author and more criminal than the latter.”
The government has undertaken deep reforms to prevent corruption and the premier also urged sentencing of the corrupted officials among its ranks.
The government aims at turning the country into a low-intensity one concerning crime levels, especially at this time when the country is trying to speed fast in the integration process with the European Union.
Fighting economic crime remains another main topic of interest in the future, the premier said, adding that managing road traffic is a key shortcoming bringing many deaths on Albanian roads.
