TIRANA, Feb. 27 – A government decision this week has made the certification of cash compulsory only once in every two years. Government had earlier cut maintenance costs to 4,000 lek (Euro 28), down from 9,400 lek in a step aimed at reducing costs for businesses.
Three years after making the installation of cash registers compulsory, the initiative has not proved very successful as only few businesses issue tax receipts regularly in order to avoid inclusion in the VAT scheme which foresees an annual turnover of 5 million lek.
The initiative has had minor impact also in VAT collection, which has been slowing down due to sluggish domestic consumption and high informality.
