TIRANA, Jan. 10 – Defense authorities said that they have destroyed 20,660 tonnes of old ammunition during last year.
Deputy Defense Minister Ekrem Spahiu said the army continues to destroy old ammunition inherited from communism and its main goal is to eliminate all of them by 2013.
Spahia said that under a plan another 25,000 tonnes should be dismantled this year, based on the increase of the disposing capacities and the financial assistance from the NATO member countries.
Removing ammunition dismantling depots from populated areas is one of the successes that the ministry is promoting especially after the blast three years ago in Gerdec, close to Tirana, at a private disposal factory, which killed 26 people and injured 300 others.
Albania still has about 70,000 tonnes of old ammunition on its territory. The tiny Balkan country became a NATO member two years ago and disposing of excess ammunition is one of the main goals along that road, also assisted from NATO members
Albania inherited 194,000 tonnes of ammunition from the communist regime in thousands of army depots around the country.
