TIRANA, July 11 – Former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini was declared Tuesday as an honored citizen in capital Tirana.
Franco Frattini was awarded the “Honorary Citizen” medal from Tirana’s municipality at a ceremony held at the “Brigade Palace.” Prime Minister Sali Berisha, other Albanian politicians, and also representatives of the western embassies were present.
Tirana Mayor Lulzim Basha appreciated Frattini’s role considering him as Albanians’ special friend.
“The personality we are about to honor, today gets the keys of the city, because he has the keys of the Albanians hearts,” said Basha.
Frattini has been a well-known personality in the country. He is also evaluated for his push and role in promoting visa lifting for Albanians and other western Balkan countries.
Berisha hailed Frattini for always helping Albania in the European integration.
“Since the first time I met him, I felt as if I met a very honorable friend, a personality that had friendly feelings towards Albanians, in met with a senior official of Brussels who would be our main advocate in the Council of Europe,” said Berisha.
Frattini was grateful for Albanians’ sincere and brotherly friendship.
“I appreciate the attempts of the cabinet regarding recommendations’ fulfillment. I think that the crucial point is the electoral reform and I hope it will be resolved soon. I know of Berisha’s attempts to remove immunity. It will be an indicative sign for UE,” said Frattini.
Albania has applied for the EU’s candidate status. Foreign Minister Edmond Panariti made his first official visit after taking the post to Rome, considering Italy as a strategic partner.
