‘Greater Albania’ claims unfounded

TIRANA, May 4 – The Serb media reported this time a statement from Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Konuzin expressing concern about the existence of a project to establish a so-called Greater Albania.
That is no surprise. Such concerns are always heard mainly from Belgrade but also time and again by its supporters, like Moscow, considering it “a very dangerous project for the entire Southeastern Europe region.”
They continue to state they would strongly oppose attempts to form a Greater Albania.
These claims are unfounded, Albanian analysts say.
Because there has never been any idea for a Greater Albania, at least not coming from Albania, or other top Albanian leaders in the region.
True in times of war any fighter could say that joining Albania could be the best way either for Kosovo or even Macedonia with a great ethnic Albanian population.
But such calls have never been founded on any basis, or any plan, or any hidden strategy in any of those Albanian-populated places.
Albania has always insisted that joining the two countries _ Albania and Kosovo _ will only be done when they both become members of the European Union, thus referring to the same friendship and ties that EU member countries have, but no border merging or extinguishing.
It is clear that new borders in the Balkans would immediately spark reactions and likely new wars from which it has already suffered a lot.
All Balkan countries and populations know well that changing borders is not something Europe, would agree with, or even allow them to, he said.
