TIRANA, March 7 – A regulatory task force led by Prime Minister Sali Berisha has cut the licenses and authorizations needed to start construction works after obtaining concession contracts for hydropower plants from 23 to 13. The decision made this week is aimed at reducing bureaucracy for companies investing in renewable energy and further attracting investments in this sector to increase domestic electricity production.
“Other important decisions must be taken to cut deadlines and make issuance of permits and licences easier for companies engaged in HPP construction,” said Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
While government boasts says it has signed 360 concession contracts for the construction of small and medium-sized HPPs, the opposition Socialist Party is worried that only few of these HPPs are currently operational.
