GJIROKASTRA, Sept. 5 – During the 22 kilometers from Gjirokastra to Kakavie along the minority villages of Dropulli i poshtem one may see many abandoned houses with stone tiles and a beautiful nature around. It is a very fertile agriculture land but now one may see only sheep and other cattle.
The land has been abandoned by farmers who have mostly gone to neighboring Greece. Immigration is very much spread at this area. According to the data from the communes there only about 70 families have returned from immigration to live back to their homeland.
Many others continue to aim at leaving the country for neighboring Greece where they find better living, jobs and accommodation. Many elders are seen in the villages, the only ones who have remained there probably to protect the houses. In Goranxi village, for example from 200 families only 60 have remained with youngsters going to Greece, or even to Gjirokastra or other Albanian towns. In Sofratike the remained residents complain about the lack of water supply despite the new resources built in the last two years.
Despite the living conditions the relations between the Albanian and ethnic Greek minorities have always remained very warm and have had no problems. Local authorities do not make any differentiation for the businesses started from the minority businessmen. There are some such 120 businesses there. Many of them may be considered very successful ones and spread all around the country and beyond, like ELKA, FRESH, Glina, and any other.
