TIRANA, March 9 – Preparations are under way by local authorities as Albania’s municipal elections of June 21 approach, and international partners are offering assistance in providing better local governance following the elections.
USAID organized a roundtable this week to discuss the new law on the organization and functioning of local governance in Albania.
The July 21 elections will be the first based on the new municipal division with 61 municipalities, down from 384 in the previous decades.
The American government’s aid organization is supporting the government of Albania to draft the law to reflect current economic and territorial changes which will allow better management of local resources and provision of services for Albanian citizens.
The purpose of the meeting was to gather stakeholders to share insights on the current law and elicit input on the vision and structure of the new law.
These are part of the efforts to strengthen local governance in Albania and implement decentralization legislation and policies by providing technical assistance and training to the Albanian institutions.
