National art gallery’s sculptures to be catalogued

TIRANA, August 2 – Some 700 sculpture works, part of the National Art Gallery’s collection, are being photographed and catalogued in an effort to better promote the history of Albanian sculpture.
Researcher Ylli Drishti says the photographing and cataloguing process will also help determine restoration needs for the sculpture collection.
The new guidebook will also serve to promote participation in international exhibitions.
Currently only 19 sculpture works are on display at the National Art Gallery’s exhibition spaces.
The National Art Gallery is currently displaying an exhibition by British photographer Martin Parr. The exhibition includes works from three of Martin Parr’s collections: “Albania 1990” showing images from his visit to Albania in that year; “Common Sense”, showing western consumerism and “Small World” showing famous tourist destinations that have become victims of their own success. It will be open until August 7.
Apart from temporary exhibitions, the National Arts Gallery boasts a rich permanent collection. In seven halls, the gallery displays the history of Albanian painting, dating from the end of the 19th century, a period which marks the beginning of secular painting in Albania, to nowadays.
