TIRANA, April 2 – The Albanian parliament on Monday evening voted in favor of nominating three new judges at the Supreme and Constitutional Courts.
The opposition abstained, saying they were against the procedure of the president, who had decreed the new judges while forgetting two other decrees issued from his predecessor for the same positions.
The parliament voted 76 votes in favor of Xhezair Zaganjori, now a judge of the Constitutional Court, to become member of the Supreme Court.
Zaganjori was also a candidate for president offered from the governing Democrats a year ago who withdrew from the race after finding not enough support in the parliamentary groupings.
The parliament also voted with 73 votes for Gani Dizdari to become a Constitutional Court judge and Besnik Ymeraj with 76 votes for the same court. Both were judges at the Supreme Court.
It should be noted that the voting succeeded due to the presence of the small Socialist Movement for Integration Party in its last day as part of the governing coalition before it withdrew following a call from the opposition Socialists to join them for the June 23 polls.
