TIRANA, Jan 5 – Many of the most important personalities in the country, part of a group referred to as the council of the mature people, consider June elections in the country as fundamental to the progress of democracy in post-communist Albania.
Former President Alfred Moisiu has said he expects Albania to conduct elections like all other countries, without any distortion or other violations. “That would be the best congratulations for the country,” he says.
Writer Dritero Agolli, the former lawmaker from the main opposition Socialists, also declined to forecast the winner of the elections but noted the importance of elections to the country’s prospects.
Servet Pellumbi, another former leader of the opposition Socialists, said Albania would have to cope with many difficulties unless elections are free and fair. “If they do not have standards then there is no future for Albania,” he said.
Sabri Godo, leader of the governing coalition Republicans, said that politicians should consider the nation’s utmost goals and work together to accomplish the main issues of the country. He also added Tirana was of great importance due to its support of Kosova at this important moment for the newly-created country.
Godo said elections were decisive for the country’s integration into the European union. He added that they should not be contested and also should be accepted by everyone.
Albania is expected to hold general parliamentary elections in June 21 or 28. which are the final Sundays in that month.
The parliament and the president approved the new electoral code and the president is expected to decree the date of the polls by January 22.
