TIRANA, Sep. 21 – Albania’s speaker of parliament, Jozefina Topalli, said authorities were considering the possibility of building the new parliament building at the site of the pyramid building in central Tirana, which served as the former museum of the late communist dictator Enver Hoxha. It is now a cultural center.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Sali Berisha said the country’s upcoming 100th anniversary in 2012 should be celebrated with a new parliament building and a new national stadium.
Topalli said that the idea of building the new parliament at the pyramid site came from some lawmakers, and she now supports the idea.
She said it could be a symbolic gesture on how the tiny Balkan country, a former communist one, builds the new era over the old regime which it has left behind.
