TIRANA, Dec. 1 – Investigators have found out that part of the money from the VEFA pyramid scheme have been transferred to Budapest, Hungary.
VEFA’s boss Vehbi Alimuca was released from prison earlier this year and his attempt to access the money led police to the account.
Tirana prosecutor’s office is again investigating Alimuca on money laundry charges after finding out he had $900,000 at a bank in Budapest.
Alimuca has denied he was aware of such an amount, adding he had deposited only $10,000 in that country, where his previous company aimed to open a business.
The investigation had started three months ago.
The collapse of such investment schemes in post-Communist Albania sparked widespread and deadly rioting in 1997. An estimated 1.68 million investors lost $1.26 billion from 24 pyramid schemes that collapsed.
