TIRANA, Feb. 24 – Tirana is one of the least appealing places to live in Europe, according to Mercer’s Quality of Living annual survey.

The Albanian capital sat in 179th position out of 230 cities worldwide in the 2016 survey released this week by the U.S based global consultancy company.

Vienna topped the list as the world’s best city to live in for a third year in a row, whereas Baghdad is the worst city to live in, the study found.

Despite security issues, social unrest and concerns about the region’s economic uncertainties, European capitals continue to offer very high living standards with seven West European cities making the top ten list. Meanwhile, Tirana together with Kiev (176th) and Minsk (190th) were the least attractive cities in the old continent.

The position of the Albanian capital is little changed compared to last year, after climbing just one position.

The best ranked city in the region was the Croatian capital Zagreb, which ranked 98th in the world.

Mercer conducts its Quality of Living survey on an annual basis to help multinational companies provide fair compensation to their employees on international assignments.

The rankings are based on various criteria including political, social and economic environmental, health and education factors as well as public services.
