TIRANA, March 15 – Daniel Fearn, Director for the Western Balkans at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, on Tuesday concluded a three-day visit to Albania. During his visit, Fearn met the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and leader of the Opposition, as well as MPs, officials and NGO representatives.
Fearn emphasised the strength of UK-Albania relations and the UK’s firm commitment to enlargement of the EU to include all the countries of the Western Balkans, once conditions are met. He stressed that strengthening of democracy and independent institutions were essential for Albania’s further EU progress.
In his meetings, Mr Fearn noted that the forthcoming local elections were the immediate priority. All sides need to play their part in making these elections a success, and ensuring that they meet European standards and the Albanian public’s expectations. He stressed that cooperation would need to continue after the May elections to sustain reform and ensure the implementation of the EU’s 12 key reform priorities. It was the responsibility of government and opposition to work together on this and to put the national interest ahead of party politics or personal interest.
In conclusion, the Director noted that the UK continued to strongly support the development of the justice sector in Albania. On the third anniversary of the Gerdec tragedy, Mr Fearn stressed that it would be important to see justice delivered. He also urged all parties to support the Prosecutor General in carrying out a credible, independent and comprehensive investigation of the events of 21 January.
