TIRANA, July 24 – Albanian Interior Minister Sokol Olldashi said Monday at a parliament’s session that some 130 killers who have been sentenced by the Albanian courts were at large, or ‘free in the streets,’ accusing the prosecutor office for delaying penal procedures to arrest them.
True that the statement came at a political row between the central government of Prime Minister Sali Berisha and Prosecutor-General Theodhori Sollaku. But that is a very terse detail that should normally disturb every citizen. It has been long known and said that Albania has already good laws but the problem remains their application. This time we are speaking of people who have killed someone, something that in the tiny Balkan country could normally spark a family feud. That also speaks of why the Albanian authorities lack trust among the population.
As if to support such an idea a 60 year old man kills two other people at his home after they claimed the move of a dividing wall. Is that the answer, or a solution to such a request? That may be interpreted in different ways but one may be that the people lack the trust in the government authorities. Media said that the two murdered persons had gone to the police to resolve the issue. Police had pulled down the wall in favor of the two dead persons and following a court decision. It seemed that the laws were not efficient enough to stop the suspect commit the crimes with 29 Kalashnikov bullets.
People may listen everyday murders occurring all around the country. It would be a surprise if Albanian print and electronic media would not report a murder somewhere in the country. Local media have all their lengthy reports on such crimes.
