DURRES, Aug. 8 – Some 50,000 persons came through the Durres port in a week, mainly Albanian immigrants coming from neighboring Italy, according to local police. There were also other immigrants coming from other western European countries for vacations or to see their families. So during the first week of August 35,677 Albanians and 6,557 foreigners came by ferries from the Italian ports of Bari, Ancona and Trieste.
Other thousands of Albanians come from Greece. In Kakavie on Monday there came 7,780 Albanians and 278 foreigners with 1,510 vehicles and 2,860 Albanians and 144 foreigners left the country in 865 vehicles. Police said that they expect more Albanian immigrants to enter in the coming days. There have been no incidents or delays in the crossing point due to better coordination with the Greek police.
The situation in Qafe Thane border crossing point with Macedonia has been more difficult in recent days due to the great influx. Customs head Jace Hysolli said that on average 2,000 persons have entered the country daily, mainly from Kosova. The crossing point has a slower control because it has not installed the new system.
