TIRANA, Aug. 8 – Besides many attempts to increase tourist resources there have been noted some shortcomings for which authorities should pay a considerable higher attention to resolve.
The Institute of Public Health has concluded that sea waters alongside the Albanian shores overcome the hygienic levels set from the World Health Organization. The study checked waters in Durres, Vlora and Saranda showing that black waters have significantly polluted their waters.
In Durres the beach at the Plepa area, Golem and Currila is three high more polluted than allowed. Waters in Vlora and Saranda are above the WHO norms as well. Cleanest waters are in Dhermi, Himara, Borsh, Velipoja and Zvernec.
In a separate case health officials in Elbasan said that there is an increased number of patients suffering from skin infections. Patients have been mainly children up to 12 years old, according to doctor Besnike Dedja. The cause of the infection is polluted waters in the Shkumbini river beaches. Last summer there were some 300 persons in Elbasan who suffered from the same disease.
There is a considerable higher number of patients in Saranda hospital as well, 50-60 a day, mainly children. They suffer from high temperature, diarrhea and vomiting that doctors say come from the hot summer and hygienic causes. There have also been patients with skin infections that doctors say may have come from the sand in the beach. Presence of the rubbish in the area may be another cause.. Hepatitis A cases have also been found, something that has urged health authorities add specialists in the hospital.
