TIRANA, March 29 – Police in the coastal city of Vlora have seized 1.3 metric tons of cannabis ready to be smuggled to Italy.

Officers tracked the drugs after pursuing two vehicles dragging a speed boat near the Zvernec area. Police said that the drivers managed to abandon their vehicles and leave the site.

Officers inspected the vehicles and found the drugs in 52 small plastic packages divided in 10 sport bags.

Authorities said that they are working to identify the suspects.

Earlier this week, the Italian Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Franco Roberti said that drug trafficking from Albania was a phenomenon that has sparked great concern in Italy.

“We have witnessed a surge in the traffic of drugs from Albania to Puglia and Calabria. We are talking about dozens of tons of drugs,” he said.
