TIRANA, July 9 – A Japanese-government funded project worth $79 million will make possible the construction of a wastewater treatment plant, serving hundreds of thousands of inhabitants in Tirana and outside it.
“This project which is just kicking off will bring huge development to the infrastructure of Tirana, but even the Kashar area (outside the capital). It will serve 350,000 inhabitants and have a big impact on environment protection and employment of Albanians,” said Transport Minister Edmond Haxhinasto at the launch of works for the plant’s construction this week.
“I would like to thank the Japanese government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency for finalizing this project which started in 2005,” added Haxhinasto.
Japan’s Kubota Corporation and Italy’s Construzioni Dondi spa have been contracted to implement the project expected to finish in the next couple of years.
“As a result of the economic reforms in 1991, the Tirana Municipality and its neighborhoods are growing rapidly. This municipality has been using sewage collection system since 1960s, however it lacks sewage treatment system,” says Tokyo Engineering Consultants which conducted a study on the development plan Sewerage System and Sewage Treatment Plant for Tirana.
“Greater Tirana has experienced rapid increase in population, unregulated urbanization, and improvements in the water supply system. On the other hand, existing sewerage system has not been improved to meet increased demands, except for repair of the sewers. This may accelerate pollution of water in Lana and Tirana Rivers due to discharge of untreated sewage and industrial effluents.”
