TIRANA, Feb. 27 – According to the European Agency for Asylum (EASO) report, Albania continued to be among the top ten countries with the highest number of asylum seekers in Europe in 2019.

According to the report, the number of asylum applications from Kosovo citizens declined compared to a year ago.

Iraqi citizens, who top the list of ten countries with the most asylum applications, saw a 19 percent drop in 2019, while applications from Turkish citizens increased by 10 percent.

Albania ranks behind Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran and Nigeria in the number of asylum applications.

The report cites that Syrian citizens involved in the war were the biggest beneficiaries of asylum in the EU, with about 85 percent of applicants receiving it.

Whereas among the Western Balkan countries that do not need visas to enter the EU, the number of applicants was about 1 percent for the citizens of North Macedonia and 6 percent for the citizens of Albania.
