Updated: Six new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Albania

TIRANA, March 21 - Six new coronavirus cases were once again confirmed in the last 24 hours in Albania, bringing the total number of infected people to 76. Five of the patients who tested positive are in Tirana, while the sixth patient lives in Fier. All of the patients had recently returned from Italy or had been in contact with infected people .

So far, tests have been conducted on 778 people. Out of the total 37 hospitalized patients, four are in intensive care, though none require ventilator machines for the moment. The rest of the patients remain in stable condition.

According to the Ministry of Health, 59 percent of the infected patients are men and 41 percent are women. Meanwhile, there are 310 total beds available at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Tirana.

The Ministry of Health also announced that first two patients who tested positive for the coronavirus in Albania are now cured. However, they will have to be quarantined at home for 14 days.

Currently, there are 55 cases in Tirana, eight in Fier, five in Durres, two in Lushnja, two in Elbasan, two in Rrogozhina and two in Kavaja.

Last week, a 73-year-old woman who had recently returned from Italy died at Durres Hospital after testing positive for the coronavirus and a 66-year-old man from Lushnja died on Thursday, marking the second COVID-19 victim. They both had multiple health conditions related to the lungs, heart and kidneys.

The Albanian government has restricted movement of automobiles and pedestrians throughout the territory by imposing strict curfews. On Sunday, no people or cars will be able to move around the city, as the streets will be patrolled by the police. All international air, sea and land travel to neighboring countries and Europe are banned. Schools, kindergartens, bars, restaurants, hotels, stadiums, concert halls, gymnasiums, and parks are also closed.
