Kosovo’s coalition partners clash over state of emergency

TIRANA, March 19 - Kosovo's Prime Minister Albin Kurti said on Wednesday that he has decided to sack the Interior Minister Agim Veliu from the coalition partner, Democratic League of Kosovo, due to disagreements over whether or not to declare a state of emergency amid the coronavirus pandemic.

President Hashim Thaci's postion to declare it was openly supported by Veliu, but without the Prime Minister's consent.

Democratic League chairman Isa Mustafa said the dismissal of Veliu is unacceptable and constitutes a breach of the coalition agreement, adding it was a culmination of differences between the coalition partners on whether a tariff of 100% on goods produced in Serbia should be abolished.

Mustafa warned he will file a motion for a no-confidence vote in the government.

On Tuesday night, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci said after a meeting of the National Security Council that he has signed a decree declaring a state of emergency and will send it to parliament for approval.
