TIRANA, March 25 – The euro continued its rally against the lek on Wednesday as it reached a record high since last year.

According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, one euro was exchanged for 124.47 lek, continuing to gain points against the domestic currency by 0.63 lek on a daily basis.

This has been the highest exchange rate since April of last year.

The US dollar has also continued to strengthen as coronavirus fears have taken over the global markets. According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, one dollar was exchanged for 114.8 lek, about 0.34 points more than the day before.

The only businesses currently operating in the Albanian market are supermarkets, grocery stores and pharmacies which continue to import as usual and in turn require euros to buy goods from abroad. After the closure of businesses such as bars or restaurants and all non-vital business activity to contain the spread of the coronavirus, consumption is centered mostly in grocery stores and supermarkets.
