DURRES, Oct.26 – The Italian Secretary for Agriculture, Gianni Mongielli, declared that Albania is the main entry point of the green corridor that is opening up from Italy to the rest of South Eastern Europe. Albania has become a friendlier gate since the volume of exported crime has decreased significantly. This statement came in a meeting of the Secretary with Albanian Agriculture Minister Jemin Gjana. Sixteen ministers of Agriculture from Central and European countries participated in a two day conference taking place in Durres.
Gjana took this opportunity to present to his Italian colleague the main challenges that the Albanian agriculture is facing and also its potential to develop in the future. Agriculture is accountable for 25-30 percent of the GDP in the country. One interesting topic was agro-tourism. Italy has a wide experience with this kind of industry and Minister Gjana asked for an exchange of expertise in order to exploit the potential of specific Albanian resources like river valleys and city suburbs. The Albanian government has already developed cooperating programs with Italian institutions in Bari, Padova, Roma, etc.
Giving a positive assessment for the performance of the Albanian government so far, Mongielli, who comes from Puglia, expressed his intense attention to all Albanian developments. He also put forward a proposal to organize a conference for the Foreign and Economy Ministers of the two countries in order to discuss small agricultural economy and agro-tourism. Mongielli also referred to the preparations of a meeting which will be attended by all local directors of agro-tourism in Italy. Mongielli finished by assessing that the image of Albania is changing positively. He said that the world is starting to see Albania with a different perspective, with good will and trust.
