TIRANA, March 23 – Albania and Kosova held Friday their joint commission meeting of the transport and telecommunication officials trying to further facilitate the free movement of their citizens and discuss issues of the transport of persons and goods. Both sides said there was improvement in monitoring the transport of passengers that serve to tourism on both sides of the border. One of the issues was the liberalization of the transport of goods. Albania offered to make their transport for free. Both countries said they should further improve, amend their legislation and unify the documentation. They decided to create a joint working team on that. Vehicles are normally checked only once when entering the other country. They decided to work on compiling a new transport agreement that will have a more liberal aspect.
Albania has started to build a four-lane stretch of highway that will shorten the route to neighboring Kosova, in the biggest ever infrastructure project in the tiny Balkan country. Kosova, a U.N.-run province in Serbia, is important to Albania because most of the tourists visiting the western Balkan country are ethnic Albanians from Kosova or Macedonia as well as expatriate Albanians returning from other parts of Europe. The completed 170-kilometer highway will run from the port city of Durres to the town of Kukes and then to the Morina border crossing point.
