Albanian citizen killed by Greek police during anti-drug raid near Albanian-Greek border

TIRANA, Nov. 23 – Greek media sources reported on Thursday 39-year-old Altin Mulla was killed by Greek police and a Greek police officer’s hand was lightly wounded allegedly during a shootout in the context of an anti-drug operation conducted against an Albanian criminal ring.

The incident took place near the Greek-Albanian border in the Visan area of Pogoni, but on the Greek side.

According to Greek media, which in turn referred to police sources, Greek police responded to a gunshot by killing Mulla, while three others are suspected to have escaped the area and are now being wanted.

The Greek police of Ioannina has not made any statements on the event, while Greek sources have reported the operation is still underway. Preliminary Greek sources have reported two firearms and about 100 kilograms of marijuana have been confiscated so far.

While the country’s foreign ministry is taking all necessary steps with Greek counterparts, the Albanian State Police issued a statement ensuring citizens and the victim’s family members that all necessary steps are followed in context of diplomatic and bilateral police cooperation in order to clarify the circumstances that led to Mulla’s death.
