TIRANA, March 9 – Albanian Mobile Communications (AMC), owned by Greek wireless operator Cosmote, reached the one-million customer mark last month, Cosmote said in a statement made available on Friday.” AMC has exceeded one million customers, as of February 2007, consolidating its position as the leader in the Albanian mobile telecommunications market,” the statement said. Cosmote attributed the success to the launch of innovative products and easy to use, state-of-the-art services. AMC had 990,279 subscribers at end-December, up 26.7 percent from 2005. It reported 89,314 new customers for the fourth quarter of last year alone. AMC’s lead competitor in the market is Vodafone Albania, which had 919,000 subscribers at the end of 2006. The mobile operator reported a 20.3 percent annual rise in 2006 net income to 49.9 million euro ($65.6 million), as revenue increased by 9.7 percent and reached 151 million euro. AMC is Albania’s first mobile operator. Cosmote bought an 85 percent state-owned stake in it for $85.6 million in 2000. The remaining shares are still owned by the government in Tirana.
