TIRANA, Feb. 23 – The National Statistics Institute (INSTAT) reported to the Statistics Council its annual performance review for 2006. The report was presented by head of INSTAT Gerta Picari who emphasized the structural changes during the institute work for the year. An organizational overhaul of the institute has brought more efficient work practices according to Picari. She also praised the increased engagement of the Council in monitoring and evaluating the activity of INSTAT.
Picari explained that during 2006 INSTAT assumed a new role, that of a decision maker instead of a plain consultative body. It had a role in approving the budget draft, the 5 year plan for official statistics, etc. Numerating the achievements, Picari pondered upon the designing of the National Program for adjusting Albanian statistical legislation to the corresponding EU legislation, the qualitative improvement of the periodical publishing, the shorter timing of preparing GDP data, etc. Picari also mentioned the main challenges that the institute has to face in the future such as strengthening relationships with other statistical agencies, involvement in the medium term budget preparation and implementing the 5 year statistical plan. Picari concluded by expressing gratitude to supportive international bodies such as EUROSTAT, FMN, WB, which have assisted INSTAT to get closer to international levels.
